Automotive/Vehicle Armoring: Handgun and Assault Rifle Protection

Handgun Armoring ProcessOur Composite Armor Panels find extensive use in the automotive armor industry. Kevlar Armor Panels, Flex-Pro Thermoformable Armor Panels, Dyneema, and Spectra Shield Ballistic Panels are well suited for this type of application where lightweight ballistic protection is needed. These bulletproof panels are durable, very lightweight and simple to install. In vehicle armoring you add additional weight to the vehicle, so when using these composite ballistic panels added weight is kept to the absolute minimum. Not only will they extend the life of your vehicle’s brakes and suspension, they also reduce maintenance costs and improve overall vehicle performance. No special tools are need for cutting or installation. A disadvantage is that they are not well suited for protection from armor piercing rounds, attacks from IED’s, or blast mitigation.

Automotive/Vehicle Armoring: Blast Mitigation, Armor Piercing Rounds or IED Protection

Steel Armor Plates Our Steel Armor Plate finds extensive use in the automotive armor industry when you need to protect the vehicle from armor piercing rounds, attacks from IED’s, blast mitigation, and fragmentation threats. Used for the vehicle floor, roof, fire wall, doors and side walls, we provide the following grades: AR 500, MIL-A-46100, MIL-A-12560 Class 1 and 2, MIL-A-46177, from 1/8” to 1-1/2” for handgun threats and up to .50 caliber armor piercing rounds, depending on the product.

Fiberglass for Wall PanelsArchitectural Use

For the hardening of government buildings, court houses, schools, banks, military installations, nuclear power plants and residential safe room construction. Our Steel Armor Plate and Fiberglass Ballistic Armor Panels would be the most cost effective products for this application, due to their low cost and superior ballistic protection. These panels also add strength and stability, especially if your need is for the added protection from bomb blasts or heavy assault rifle attacks. Our Kevlar Armor Panels, Flex-Pro thermoformable Armor Panels, in a standalone lay up work well for curved applications, such as judge’s benches, speaker podiums, or desks. Dyneema and Spectra Shield Ballistic Panels are also well suited for when lightweight ballistic protection is needed for assault rifle protection. Typically, their use in such applications would be limited to special situations, due to the higher cost, limited sizes, and thickness.

Kevlar Armor PanelsKevlar Armor Panels

A considerable breakthrough in the development of modern ballistic armor was the creation of the aramid fibers called "KEVLAR". Kevlar is the registered trade name used by DuPont for the aramid fiber. Kevlar was originally marketed for use in strengthening radial tire belts but soon found applications in protective clothing, cables, and protective housings for equipment. Because Kevlar is a flexible fiber, it can be woven into cloth. Such cloth is strong enough to stop high-speed projectiles and, in layers, will stop bullets. Available in sheet sizes of: 50"x41", 50"x48", 50"x72" and 50"x96".

Kevlar is five times stronger than steel and ten times stronger than aluminum, and does not burn or melt. By using Kevlar in conjunction with resins like those used to make fiberglass, it's possible to mold Kevlar in "composite" materials or armor. These composites find use in ballistic helmets and lightweight vehicle armor, as well as bank counters, safe rooms, and guard stations. Kevlar is also used in making bullet resistant vests. Kevlar composites will stop most handgun rounds up to .44 Magnum. Please Note: Kevlar will not stop rifle rounds. Please see our Dyneema or Spectra Shield Armor Panels for assault rifle protection.

Our Kevlar Armor Panels can be installed in a vehicle using glue, rivets, screws, or nuts and bolts with washers. We can also water jet cut these armor panels to your exact specifications, please contact us for more information.

Flex-Pro Armor Panels

Kevlar Armor Panels

FLEX-PRO 50"x41" Thermoformable Vehicle Armor Panels are a laminated composite armor fabricated from a vulcanized urethane 3000 denier aramid composite. FLEX-PRO Armor panels are semi-rigid, and have excellent multi-hit capabilities and will not bunch up or fall down during ballistic incidents or severe vehicle use. Flex-Pro Ballistic Panels are thermoformable, with the use of a heat gun these panels can be formed and bent into complex shapes and will retain these shapes.

Further, FLEX-PRO Armor can be cold bonded to the vehicle surface or mechanically attached. Because FLEX-PRO Armor is based on aramid fibers there is no degradation due to vehicle temperature extremes. FLEX-PRO Armor can be easily fit into tight spaces in one piece, thereby eliminating the problems with butt joints, overlaps and the potential of secondary projectiles from the fasteners used to hold the panels in place. At NIJ standard 0108.01, level IIIA configuration of this material has an aerial density of 1.0 pounds per square foot. This provides a significant reduction in weight from more commonly used high hard steel at 6.4 lbs per sq.ft. or aluminum alloy at 3.6 lbs per sq.ft. Please Note: FLEX-PRO Armor Panels will not stop rifle rounds. Please see our Dyneema or Spectra Shield Armor Panels for Assault Rifle Protection.

Our Flex-Pro Armor Panels can be installed in a vehicle using glue, rivets, screws, or nuts and bolts with washers. We can also water jet cut these armor panels to your exact specifications, Please contact us for more information. These panels were tested behind .040 aluminum panels, go to next higher level of protection for standalone applications. Available in sheet sizes of: 50"x41", 50"x48", 50"x72" and 50"x96".

Fiberglass Panels

Fiberglass Armor Panels

Our Fiberglass Ballistic Armor panels are manufactured using multiple layers of fiberglass cloth or woven roving that are bonded together with a preimpregnated resin under heat and pressure to form a ridged bullet resistant/bulletproof Panel. This is the same fiberglass that boats are made from, only with many more layers of the fiberglass cloth used in the process.

What are some common design applications for Bulldog Fiberglass Armor Panels? Bullet resistant panels or sheathing are specified in many design situations. The more common applications include judge's benches, courtroom protection for the jury area and the witness box, within the woodwork of teller's cages or counters in banks, as a bullet proof barrier or wall within government buildings, police stations, district attorney's offices, U.S. Marshals offices, FBI and ATF offices, guard houses, control rooms within prisons, convenience stores, check cashing stores, etc. Bulldog Fiberglass Ballistic Panels are sometimes used within high-end residences to make a "safe room". Standard sheets sizes are 48"x96". Our Bulletproof Fiberglass Armor Panels are a very cost effective product, at a lower cost than Steel Armor Plate and very easy to cut and install.
